Hi everyone! I hope you are having a great week so far.
I want to chat about how, when it comes to books, movies, or tv shows, the original is often better than whatever remake that comes afterward. I find that when you move away from an original piece of work something gets lost in transition. I don’t know how or why but this is often the case in my opinion.
A couple of weeks ago my younger brother told me how much he loves The office (US version). Having seen both the UK and US versions I thought that given the enthusiasm at which he was talking about the show, I needed to let him in a little secret. The original, the UK version, is 10 times funnier and more entertaining than the US version. Of course, at first, he doubted this would be the case especially with the rating on IMDb. I stayed strong in my opinion that the original was better and that he needed to give it a chance before judging it. It is more down-to-earth, realistic, and hilarious. I know I am biased because I’m a huge Ricky Gervais fan and anything he does is a great pick to me, but in this case, it was just a fact.
I insisted that the original is almost always better and we talked about this at length. I have so many examples where I think this applies. For instance, The Original Scooby-Doo episodes both in looks and storylines to me are so much better than the latest ones. Another great example is Heidi; the original is so much better than every other thing that came afterward. The sex and the city series caught the heart of people worldwide, but the movies were not received as well. One last example is Mulan; the redone version was complete crap in comparison with the original.
Of course, when a show starts the first few episodes which can be viewed as the originals are not as good as whatever comes later on. That is just the process of progress. The process of evolving and reshaping itself into something stronger each time. I’m talking about when the complete body of work is redone. It often falls flat in some way. It never quite fills the big shoes created by the original.
Going back to the conversation with my brother, after some convincing he decided to give the UK version of The Office a go, convinced that he would be right and have his ‘i told you so’ moment, armed with some evidence. After watching the episode he called back to say that he agreed with me 100-percent. He could not believe that the UK The Office which had a lower rating on IMDb compared to the US one was actually miles better. This also shows that rating is not everything. We should still give things a chance to wow us. A chance for us to make up our own minds, our own opinions, about it.
Obviously, the whole idea that the original is much better is one that just doesn’t hold true 100-percent of the time. An example that comes to mind is the lion king. I much prefer the redone version, it gave them time to readjust things and make the scenarios much more realistic. Also, the original body of work it is based on is Hamlet and I definitely find lion king more fun and entertaining to watch.
The moral of the story is if you find out that what you are watching or reading is actually based on something else, it would be a good idea to go back and look into the original. Like my brother, you might just be pleasantly surprised and thoroughly entertained.
P.s. please no one should come for me! I’m not saying that the US Office was crap, I am just saying that the UK version was a lot funnier and a lot more relatable in my opinion. But by all means, take the time to form your own opinion on it. In general, let’s give a respectful shout-out to the originals.
P.p.s we have three more months to reach our goals for this year! Let’s try to make every day count.
Thank you for spending time with me today and I hope you’ll be back here again next month (the first Wednesday). Have a great rest of the week!
